The DC Super Powers Collection was based on the comic book series by Jack Kirby as well as the popular Super Friends TV show.
The toyline was produced by Kenner and ran for 3 years across three series. The toyline consists of 33 figures including new DC property acquisitions of Plastic Man and Captain Marvel (re-named Shazam!). Series 3 from 1986 saw limited release of 10 figures which are all sought after by collectors.
The Super Powers toyline is known for it’s realistic sculpting, action features, and wide range of character offerings from the DC Universe.
After the close of the Super Powers line Kenner lost the license to ToyBiz to produce the 1989 Batman Movie figures known as DC Super-Heroes. The line included mostly modified Kenner sculpts of DC characters. Only five new figures were added to the line which include Movie Batman, Bob the Goon, Riddler, Lex Luthor in Business Suit, and Two Face.
Due to the poor sculpting, Kenner regained the Batman Movie license for the sequel Batman Returns and continued to produce DC figures until the company was bought by Hasbro in the 1990’s.
