Story Notes:This issue features the first appearance of the Neal Adam’s redesign of Green Arrow’s iconic costume.
Brave and the Bold # 85 is the beginning of Neal Adams’s reinvention of Green Lantern/ Green Arrow. The Adams/O’Neil team is responsible for groundbreaking work on Batman which reinvigorated the franchise. After the cancellation of the 1960’s Batman TV Series, the comic was typecast as old fashioned and neared cancellation. Carmine Infantino put in place a series of changes that would update the Batman by building on his Golden Age roots. Denny O’Neil along with other writers worked to develop stories that were more crime oriented. These stories focused on believable stories that touched on current themes such as political corruption, the environment, and drugs.
At DC, Neal Adams artwork dominated the field for its sense of realism and drama. He won several awards and soon found himself the leader of a new generation of artists that changed the look of comics in the 1970’s known as the Bronze Age.
