ABOUT: G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero began in 1982 as toyline that also concurrently had a comic book line published by Marvel to help build the background of the featured figures.
Hasbro Toys commissioned Marvel which worked with Sunbow Productions to create 30 second cartoon ads for the toyline and comic. The ads were so popular that Sunbow expanded them into two 5 part 30 minute animated features which aired in 1983 and in 1984. By 1985 G.I. Joe was picked up for a full season and continued with a cartoon series through 1992.
The original toyline ran from 1982 to 1995 and included hundreds of characters and vehicles.
