Deadpool 2 Movie Review
by Joshua H. Stulman
With the first Deadpool being such a smashing success, it’s hard to top for the sequel. But never fear, Deadpool 2 delivers on action comedy and even some romance. I originally checked out the first couple minutes online, but after seeing just the first scene I was hooked and I knew I had to see it in theaters.
If you haven’t seen the first Deadpool movie, don’t worry. You can start with Deadpool 2. It’s easy to get into and great for a date. That’s right, this is a love story! Underneath all the satire and gag humor is a really nice revenge turned redemption plot for Deadpool.
After a major failure in the opening scene, Deadpool assembles a team (X-Force) to help him enact his plan. He then seeks to become an X-Man and joins as a recruit to stop the time traveler Cable from assassinating the future great mutant dictator, Rusty.
If you enjoyed Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the first movie, they’re back along with a ton of X-Men heroes and villains in many cameo appearances. There’s also a smartly done reference to Deadpool’s grey X-Force costume as well.
While the first Deadpool dealt with the origin of the character, and of course the first superhero R rated movie, Deadpool 2 does an excellent job telling a great story with comedy and heart that is sure to please even the novice of fans. But even though it’s a great movie, the R rating is definitely earned here so parents beware!
My major criticism is how far Deadpool 2 strays from the original Marvel comics. If you are a fan of the history of the classic X-Men, New Mutants and X-Force comics then be prepared to be frustrated. While the humor is the most consistent thing about the comics, many of the guest characters and their stories are completely rewritten or re-imagined. I’m also pretty annoyed at how some X-Men characters show up and are immediately killed off. It happens several times and becomes frustrating for long time comic fans. So check your X-Men continuity at the theater entrance.
Surprisingly, Deadpool 2 has a great soundtrack with a really nice acoustic version of “Take On Me” by A-Ha that will have you youtubing it as soon as you get home.
Deadpool 2 is the type of movie both hardcore fans and newbies will enjoy. This the first time I can say that I really enjoyed a comic film that’s completely comic book inaccurate!
