CGC is a third party comic book grading company. They are known as the premiere grading company of the industry due to their strict grading guidelines. The introduction of third party grading began twenty years ago, and has helped to bring a more universal standard to judging the condition of comic book.
The comics are graded on a 10 point number scale, with 10 being the best. The number scale is divided into intervals of 0.5 (ie. 7.5, 8.0, 8.5). Comics with a high grade of above 9.0 are divided into intervals of 0.2 (ie. 9.0, 9.2, 9.4). A grade of 10.0 is extremely rare, even for books that are fresh from the comic distributer.
Before CGC, collectors would have to agree on the condition of the comic book independently and rely moreover on variety of factors to come to a consensus on condition. The condition grades were: Poor, Fair, Good, Fine, and Mint. Conditions in these categories were expanded by adding “Very” to the “Good” and “Fine” grades. “Near Mint” was also added. All categories could be modified by adding a + or – (i.e. Fine +). CGC Number Grades relate 8.0 to Very Fine, 9.0 to Near Mint and so forth.
Because of CGC’s strict grading standards, their graded comics are valued at a premium above ungraded comics and are highly desired by collectors.
