Original Art Sketch Covers
By Joshua H. Stulman
A blank sketch cover is a variant edition to a regular comic book released by the publisher. This version is produced with an extra cover wrap made of bristol board. The outer bristol cover is completely blank except for the logo and issue number.
Marvel first produced these blank covers so that fans could take them to conventions and commission artists to create images directly onto the surface of the comic book. Previously, artists would draw on their own Bristol board pads. As the practice became more prominent, fans demanded blank covers for their favorite comic titles. DC Comics later joined in producing blank covers for particular issues and other publishers soon followed.
Not every comic book is released with a blank cover variant. Usually the first issue of a new series that is popular will have a blank cover variant or a special anniversary issue. Because of the special paper and extra wrap needed to make the blank cover variants, they usually cost more at retail and are produced in lower quantity-making them more collectible.
Original Artwork is always a fun and unique addition to any collection. It makes your collection special as each piece is by nature, a one-of-a-kind artwork. Collecting Original artwork also gives you a bit of control over the piece, as you can work directly with the artist to craft a unique image.
Between my duties to run both Brooklyn Comic Shop and publish Israeli Defense Comics, I rarely have time to work on specialty art pieces. However I recently came across several blank sketch cover comics issued by DC and Marvel. I have created a couple of covers which I am releasing for sale exclusively to the Brooklyn Comic Shop. I am also accepting commissions for blank cover sketches.
